This article discusses how student do not take advantage of thier instiution's couseling services because they believe that it would not be helpful for them. Greater number of people beleive that thier mental health has been negatively impacted by the pandemic. Although, only few percent of them are taking advantage of counselling services provided by their institution. This shows that college students are not able to trust the institution or they have normalized thier negative mental health. Key terms
- Proactive Support - is a support strategy in which a institution anticipates student issues.
- step-care model - meeting with each student in need to determine treatment interventions, such as a stress management session, a workshop or individual counseling
Quotes
- "“Convey the idea that human stress is normal, rather than pathological,” advises Locke. Or, Dennington says, remind students that “mental health is not just about therapy, it’s about wellness.”
- "63 percent of those who say it’s poor would grade their college’s response to student mental health and wellness services a C or lower (compared to 43 percent of all students)."
- “No one actively reaches out and makes sure students are doing OK, and no one takes action to address the root causes of the issues. No matter how anxious or depressed you are, that paper’s still due on Friday.”
Value
This article would help me discuss the evidence that it is also the college's responsibility to help their students with their mental health. This is another way they can give student's a sense of belonging. This help me contradict the counter - argument that came up in my research.
